SPORT
EDUCATION
COMMUNITY
Across every sport, safeguarding is becoming more demanding. Expectations are rising, guidance is changing, and the pressure on clubs and teams to “get it right” has never been higher. Yet the people at the heart of this work — Welfare Officers, coaches, team managers and volunteers — are often asked to take on complex responsibilities with limited training, time or support.
Many step into the role because they care deeply about young people. But they can quickly find themselves dealing with sensitive concerns, difficult conversations, and decisions that feel heavy to carry alone.

Safeguarding in education has never been more demanding. Schools, colleges and early years settings are navigating rising levels of need, increasingly complex family situations, and a constant flow of updated guidance. Ofsted continues to emphasise the importance of strong safeguarding culture, reflective practice and effective oversight — and Keeping Children Safe in Education highlights the need for DSLs to have the time, training and support required to carry out their role well.
In reality, many safeguarding leads and pastoral staff are holding significant emotional and organisational pressure. They’re managing disclosures, coordinating multi‑agency work, supporting staff, and making decisions that can have a profound impact on children’s lives — often without protected space to think, reflect or process the weight of the work.
Supervision and external support aren’t just “nice to have”; they’re increasingly recognised as part of maintaining safe, confident and resilient safeguarding practice.
Safeguarding in community work brings its own unique challenges. Sessions often take place in open, busy or unpredictable environments — parks, youth clubs, village halls, libraries, cafes or shared public spaces where staff have limited control over who is present and what unfolds around them. Issues can arise quickly, and practitioners are expected to respond with confidence and clarity in the moment.
Community teams regularly find themselves managing contextual risks: peer conflict, anti‑social behaviour, online spill‑over, exploitation concerns, or tensions between groups. Staff are balancing relationship‑building with young people while also holding boundaries, de‑escalating situations, and keeping everyone safe — often without the structure, staffing levels or protective systems found in more formal settings.
For many, this work is deeply rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding. Practitioners are making fast decisions, supporting young people in crisis, and navigating complex dynamics in environments that don’t always offer privacy, predictability or backup.
